WOMEN’S HEALTH INITIATIVE

Empowering Palestinian women in remote and rural communities through health

The West Bank is home to more than 3 million Palestinians, many of whom live in remote rural communities and refugee camps. The women and children who reside in remote communities and refugee camps in the West Bank have very limited access to healthcare.

Inadequate infrastructure, transportation complexities, and financial and cultural barriers create obstacles to accessible healthcare. The pandemic has amplified these factors by forcing a scaling-down of services by major healthcare providers, resulting in a surge of severe non-COVID-19 related health issues, and a significant increase in healthcare disparities. The decrease in the number of women seeking healthcare because of added mobility restrictions and fear of infection has exacerbated pre-existing health issues in women of all ages.

The Women’s Health Initiative project is guided by a 2020 Project Rozana-commissioned feasibility study that identified optimal methods for delivering health services to communities. Working with Green Land Society for Health Development, a Palestinian Hebron-based NGO, our initiative involves activities over a 36-month period:
